No fee, unless we recover it.

One of the most frequent responses we hear when we advise companies, government agencies or individuals that we located outstanding cash assets is: “Nobody owes us any money”. Consider these statistics:

  • A total of at least $32.877 billion is currently outstanding to 117 million accounts in the United States.
  • An estimated 7 out of 10 households and businesses are owed outstanding cash assets.
  • In 2006, $1.754 billion was returned to the rightful owners from 1.929 million accounts.

Outstanding cash assets can be any financial asset or sum of money that may have been lost, forgotten about, or never received by the owner. Typical types of assets include:

  • Utility deposits (very common), credit balances, store refunds
  • Uncashed dividend, payroll or cashier’s checks
  • Stock certificates or accounts, bonds, mutual fund accounts
  • Life insurance policy proceeds
  • Undistributed wages
  • Checking and savings accounts
  • Safe deposit boxes
  • Royalty payments
  • Court payments or deposits
  • Tax overpayments

Once these assets are turned over to a government agency, they can be extremely difficult to locate, let alone recover. The United States Treasury Department maintains that “There is no government-wide, centralized information service or database from which information on unclaimed government assets may be obtained. Each individual Federal agency maintains its own records and would need to research and release that data on a case-by-case basis.”

In addition to the federal government and the myriad agencies which it is comprised, there are the states, counties, municipalities, bankruptcy and probate courts that also hold unclaimed assets.
